[KMDG-L] Collaboration platform

Hello List,

Our library is involved in a pilot project for what may become a campus-wide knowledge management initiative. We're trying to get something up and running quickly. We're contracting for a question-and-answer base service, but we still have to gather the material to go into it. For our knowledge gathering phase, we're looking for an online platform where we can collaboratively create documents (like Google Drive) but with light project management capabilities as well so we can better track approval of content and perhaps other administrative issues. Free would be best. A tall order I know, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

[KMDG-L] Participate in global survey to determine the perception and readiness of Web 2.0 and Knowledge Management in university libraries

Hello everyone,

I'm a Ph.D. student at the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, Ishikawa, Japan. In collaboration with Professors Ikeda and Agarwal, I am conducting a survey study to determine the perceptions of librarians regarding Knowledge Management (KM) and the degree to which the library is ready to adopt KM using Web 2.0. The survey targets mainly people who are working in academic libraries.

Please pass on the survey to other academic libraries whom you believe might benefit from the survey.

We'd be obliged if you could kindly participate in the survey by clicking on any one link below. It should take you about 15 minutes:

[KMDG-L] ISKO UK afternoon event "Information, a risky business" October 24th

Please don't forget to reserve you place for ISKO UK's next afternoon event, to think about the risks of poor information management - and how to combat them (or even, how to exploit them to get your boss on side!). The meeting starts at 14.00 on Thursday 24 October at the British Dental Association, 64 Wimpole Street, London, W1G 8YS, and concludes at 18.00, when you can stay on for networking, wine and nibbles. Reserve your place by October 20th; you will find the programme and other details at <www.iskouk.org/events/risk_October2013.htm>. The event is *free*  to ISKO members and to full-time students. The fee for non-members is just *£40*. Now, here's an outline of the talks:

Information is critical to all public sector bodies today, placing them at significant risk if it is not managed and organized in such a way that it can easily and quickly be found. Using case studies from the private and public sectors and some highly experienced practitioners in the field, this latest ISKO UK event examines the causes, threats and outcomes of poor information management which put organizations at risk, why this is relevant to knowledge organization and what mitigation measures can be put in place.

Yasmin Merali, Associate Professor at Warwick Business School, will open the first session by examining the complex nature of today's information network, the shift in user b_ehaviour and the impact on organizational resilience and robustness. Mark Merifield, Head of Information Management Services at The National Archives looks at the disconnect between our IT environment and business requirements and David Haynes, a highly experienced information manager and PhD student at City University, will draw on recent work within the charity sector to demonstrate some of the knowledge organization approaches used to address information risk in the context of overall organizational change.

In the second session, Roger Poole, currently Manager -- Risk Consulting at KPMG LLP and with considerable experience of Global Records Management projects and programmes within the banking sector, describes some of the recent significant changes in approach to information risk within the Financial Services industry, a sector with a very high profile in the news in recent years. He is followed by Christina Somovilla and Aynsley Taylor, who will draw from their own experience at the Financial Ombudsman Service to examine some of the difficulties faced when trying to set policies appropriate to real business need, and to consider how organizing information properly is the best way to mitigate risk. Finally, Noeleen Schenk from Metataxis, a consultant with many years' experience working with clients to ensure effective information management structures are in place, will explain how businesses can use the risk agenda to drive improvements to their information management -- from the identification of their information assets, to their management and organization. The afternoon will end with wine and nibbles and an opportunity to discuss the afternoon event with speakers and colleagues.

All fees must be paid in advance - there is no provision for payment on arrival. Registration opens at *1.30* and we shall start promptly at 2 p.m. Please pass this invitation on to any colleagues who may be interested.

ISKO is a not-for-profit scientific/professional association with the objective of promoting research and communication in the domain of knowledge organization, within the broad field of information science and related disciplines. Founded in 2007, our UK Chapter has been attracting lively and steadily growing audiences to its afternoon meeting series as well as its very successful biennial conferences (see slides and recordings at <

Primary Research Group has published Library Use of LibGuides, ISBN 978-157440-257-5.

The study explores how many LibGuides libraries are making, the rate of growth in Lib Guide creation, and how extensively LibGuides are used. The report also covers the estimated time it takes to create a LibGuide and its impact on library productivity. The study furnishes insights on the number of librarians in an organization who use LibGuides, the support that they receive, and the marketing of LibGuides to faculty and students, among many other issues. The study also points out the most admired LibGuides, the most used, and gives hard data on the number of LibGuides from institutions other than their own that libraries are using. The study helps its readers to answer questions such as: how many libraries are using LibGuides as their library website? What are library plans for LibGuides in the future? Have libraries considered alternatives to LibGuides? How satisfied are libraries with LibGuides? What kinds of LibGuides are libraries developing and how are they encour!
aging students and faculty to use them?

Just a few of the studys main findings are that:
The growth rate over the past year in the stock of LibGuides for the private colleges in the sample was an astounding 63%.
College libraries with a budget in excess of $3 million maintained a mean of 109 LibGuides.
42.11% of the libraries sampled have one or more individuals whose primary job it is to create LibGuides or other kinds of research guides.
Only 3.51% of the libraries sampled have measured or studied how much staff time it takes to develop a typical LibGuide.
31.58% of the libraries offer courses, seminars, or otherwise provide formal training in use of LibGuides to library staff.

Primary Research Group has published The Survey of Best Practices in Developing Online Information Literacy Tutorials, ISBN 978-157440-247-6. The study looks closely at how academic libraries are developing and deploying online information literacy tutorials exploring issues such as spending, budgets, staffing, range and qualifications of staff used for tutorial development, software use, time frame for tutorial development, conceptions of what constitutes a quality tutorial, assessment of library efforts, marketing to students and faculty, cooperation with other institutions, frequency of tutorial revision, measurement of student outcomes and other issues in the development and use of online information literacy tutorials.

The study was devised with the assistance of Jennifer Holland and Yvonne Mery of the University of Arizona Libraries, and Erica DeFrain of the University of Vermont Library, and the summary of main findings was written by Holland and DeFrain.

Just a few of the main findings from this exhaustive 285 page study are that:
The mean number of information literacy tutorials per library in the sample was 27.92, and the median was 10.50.
The library homepage was listed as the most popular access point for online information literacy tutorials, followed by subject guides, course guides, and YouTube.
Nearly 69% of tutorials used by the libraries in the sample were created in-house.
A third of the libraries sampled reported using the tutorials of other libraries.
The following institutions were cited by survey participants for excellence in tutorial development and a source of imitation or inspiration: Cardiff University, Clark College, Coastal Carolina University, Cooperative Library Instruction Project, Glasgow Caledonian (UK), Kent State, Manor College, Michigan State University, North Carolina State University, Open University (UK), Penn State, Rutgers, South African Universities, TILT, University of Arizona, University of California-Irvine, University of Illinois-Chicago, University of Pittsburgh, University of Sydney, University of Texas-Austin, University of Texas-Houston, Vanderbilt, Wayne State University, West Chester University, and Western Oregon University.
About a quarter of the libraries sampled assigned only one person to the task of developing information literacy tutorials for the library.
Only a third of librarians sampled felt that their institutions provided adequate support for tutorial development.
43.75% of respondents from community colleges indicating that it took less than 10 hours to develop an information literacy tutorial.
2.56% of the libraries sampled used their own in-house developed software to create tutorials.

Data is broken out by size and type of library, for US and foreign libraries, and for public and private colleges. For further information view our website at www.PrimaryResearch.com.

[KMDG-L] Final reminder: Participate in a global survey on Knowledge Management practices

Hello everyone,

My name is William Hey Tow. I am a researcher at Curtin University, investigating whether organisations know what they know. I would like to invite you to participate in this global survey on Knowledge Management practices.

The survey targets mainly people who are responsible for overall Knowledge Management practices within their organisations (CIOs, CKOs, Knowledge Managers, as such). The survey will ask you about the methods you and your organisation use to establish what knowledge exists within its boundaries, and the factors influencing Knowledge Management effectiveness.

In return for completing this 10-minute survey (29 KM questions and 8 demographics questions), a personalised report benchmarking your organisation against the survey findings will be sent to you. Your participation is voluntary.

Please pass on the survey to other organisations whom you believe might benefit from the survey and the personalised report.

Your response is important and will be greatly appreciated. If you have any questions or comments, please email me at William.HeyTow@curtin.edu.au.
