Primary Research Group has published Institutional Digital Repository Benchmarks, 2013 Edition, ISBN 978-157440-238-4.

This 117 page study presents data from 33 institutions, mostly universities and other colleges, about their institutional digital repositories. The report presents hard data on the holdings of the repositories, and the growth in their stock of journal articles, books, dissertations, images, video and other forms of intellectual property. The study also gives detailed info on budgets and operating costs, including the cost of professional labor, as well as details on what is downloaded from the sites and by whom. These details include data on downloads from within or outside the institution, and by nation of origin of the downloader, among other variables. In addition, the study looks at issues such as marketing the repository, assuring cooperation from faculty, sources of funding, impact on the parent institution���s reputation, growth rates of content and downloading, trends in cataloging and other issues.

Just a few of the report���s many findings were that:

54.55% of repositories sampled contain video files.
21.1% of the repositories sampled publish an annual report.
9.1% of repositories in the sample have their own Facebook site.
36.3% of colleges in the sample with more than 25,000 students have formed reciprocal access, development or marketing arrangements with other digital repositories.
The median number of direct downloads of articles, image files and other forms of intellectual property from the repositories in the sample in the past year was 158,332. The maximum was close to 2,900,000.
Close to 45% of repository downloads come form scholars and other users within the institution itself.

Knowledge Organization (KO) is not just a fascinating research domain to attract our foremost thinkers; it also presents practical challenges to each of us as individuals, sorting out the files on our desktops physical and virtual, searching for inspiration via the Internet, or participating in the fora of social media. But there's a paradox: while KO practices permeate society, the name “Knowledge Organization” is known only to a few. Invisible boundaries separate KO researchers from the practitioners who could benefit from their findings, and also come between distinct fields of application such as records management, web design, librarianship, information retrieval, etc.

 

This conference aims to explore such boundaries, challenge them and advance our thinking into new territory. It will be the third biennial conference of the UK Chapter of ISKO. Practitioners as well as theoreticians are invited to attend and participate, along with consultants, researchers, teachers and students. There will be a mix of short and longer presentations, as well as a display of posters. The papers submitted will be peer-reviewed and published electronically on our website, together with slides and audio recordings.

We're expecting a good number of posters too, and will be encouraging the vendors of relevant software applications, products and services to support the conference by exhibiting their wares.

Primary Research Group has published The Survey of Academic Library Subject Specialists: Biology & Medical Sciences, ISBN 978-157440-224-7. This study is based on data from 55 colleges with programs in medicine and biology, predominantly from medical schools and PHD-level or research universities in the United States, Canada, the UK and Australia/New Zealand. Participants include Carnegie-Mellon, Harvard University, Rice University, McGill University, Sanofi-Aventis, University of Auckland, University of Manitoba, University of Pittsburgh, and many others.

The report looks closely at collection development plans in a broad range of areas including but not limited to: biotechnology, evolutionary biology, histology, marine biology, oncology, pathology, pharmacology, physiology, virology and many other areas.

The study also looks at medical and biology subject specialist perceptions of materials price increases, spending on eBooks, information literacy requirements in medicine/biology, contributions to the materials budget from academic departments, book and monograph purchases, database preferences and renewal plans, use of university presses, use of institutional digital repositories, trends in budget and staffing, relations with library patrons, monitoring of faculty publications as an aid in collection development decision-making, and other issues in medical/biology librarianship.

Some of the study���s many findings are that:

��� 19.23% of libraries in the sample, 23.81% of those in the United States but 0% of those in other countries, have received contributions from other departments of their college or organization to pay for information sources desired by these departments.

��� 34.62% of libraries in the sample, including 42.11% of higher education libraries and a third of medical and veterinary school libraries, have an endowment, grant or other special allocation that falls outside the normal library budget but that supplements library purchases in biology and/or the life sciences.

��� Libraries in the sample have experienced a 2.5% increase in the price of print books in biology over the past year and an 8.75% increase in the price of e-books.

��� Libraries in the sample have increased spending on biology e-books from $6,016 in 2011 to $7,520 in 2012.

Call for papers for Knowledge Management Open Session

WLIC, Singapore, August 2013

IFLA Knowledge Management (KM) Section provides an international platform
for professional communication and understanding of the significance of KM
for libraries. It gives a voice to KM on a global scale and follows the
developments in KM, promoting its practical implementation within the global
library community.

The 2013 WLIC Conference 

The annual IFLA World Library and Information Congress (WLIC) provides an
opportunity to present innovative models, case studies and
research.  Delegates and speakers from all parts of the world come together
to discuss new developments and successful practice in libraries. The
conference motto for the 2013 Conference in Singapore is: "Future Libraries:
Infinite Possibilities"

The IFLA Knowledge Management Section invites librarians and knowledge
managers to submit proposals for papers in a 2-hour session at WLIC
Singapore, 17-23 August 2013.

2-hour session at WLIC Singapore, 17-23 August 2013.

The KM Conference Programme

"Open Access (OA) in the context of full lifecycle of Knowledge Management"
is the KM Section&#8217;s theme for its 2013 Open Programme during the
conference.  Singapore provides a very multicultural context and thus the
perfect place for exchanging and sharing ideas about infinite possibilities
of KM.

We are looking for speakers who can highlight use of KM, from a global and
theoretical perspective but also with a practical aspect.  The focus should
be on Open Access movement in the intersection of both KM theory and
practice in the context of KM lifecycle: knowledge creation, organization,
dissemination and preservation. We would like to give special focus to best
practice in the Asia Pacific region.

The sub-themes are:

 

-         The 21st century KM trends and opportunities for OA

-         Knowledge creation and knowledge sharing across boundaries of
language, culture and technology

-         Innovative use of open technology to support knowledge
sharing, team-based research and e-learning

-         Case studies in application of Knowledge Management tools that
support the success of OA in library and other information services settings

-         Offering efficient and user-friendly services based on KM and OA
principles

-         Advocacy and coordination OA in the full lifecycle of KM

-         Achieving KM competencies, and OA awareness beyond the profession
through empowering librarians and other information professionals

-         Promoting OA in cooperating with international organizations, and
knowledge founders, knowledge producers and knowledge communicators 

 

Important Dates and Timelines

Submission: 

Please send an abstract of approximately 500 words, in English, no later
than February 15, 2013 to: Agnes Hajdu Barat, Programme Chair (hajdu@jgypk.u-
szeged.hu). Both abstracts and full papers should be submitted as a MS Word
file by e-mail.  The abstracts will be reviewed by Programme Committee
members of the Knowledge Management Section.

Please also attach curriculum vitae of the author(s), contact details,
professional affiliation(s), and a brief statement on their career(s). Also,
a digital photograph(s) would be useful.

Proposed papers must be original and not have been published elsewhere.  
Please attach a declaration about originality of the proposed paper and
verify that it has not been published anywhere.

Selection:

Successful applicants will be notified by March 15, 2013.

The selected presenters for the program at the Singapore conference will be
asked to submit a formal paper (for inclusion on the IFLA conference
website) no later than May 1, 2013. Papers can be submitted in one of the
official IFLA working languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German,
Russian, Spanish.  Papers should be submitted with a one-page abstract in
English. Papers should not be longer than 20 pages.  Papers must be original
and not have been published elsewhere.  Selected papers may be nominated by
the Section for inclusion in an IFLA publication.

Presentation at the Conference:

A maximum of 20 minutes will be allowed for the presentation of each paper
during the Section's session in Singapore. Please note, although every
effort will be made to provide simultaneous interpretation into other IFLA
languages, interpretation may not be available. Therefore presenters are
encouraged to use a PowerPoint in English to facilitate understanding of the
ideas presented.  The PowerPoint for the presentation should be submitted to
the Program Chair by July 1, 2013.

At least one of the authors of the paper must present the paper. Please send
a promissory note with your signature verifying intent to attend the IFLA
Conference in Singapore to the Program Chair.

Unfortunately, the Programme Committee has no funds to assist prospective
authors: abstracts should only be submitted on the understanding that the
expenses of attending the IFLA conference (including travel, expenses and
conference fee) will be the responsibility of the author(s)/presenter(s) of
accepted papers. 

Please note that in accordance with IFLA&#8217;s Open Access Statement all
papers that are presented at the WLIC 2013 should be available under a
Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.
