This one day satellite meeting focuses on how to plan, put into practice, refine, and assess knowledge sharing systems.
It includes strategies for applying specifically in library environments as well as practical considerations, implementation tips, and more, offering a unique opportunity for librarians and other information professionals to see how to put Knowledge Sharing into Action.

Conference Theme and Focus

Knowledge Management (KM) in an institution is recognized by all to be of crucial importance. Whether the institution is a library or an organization that contains a library, librarians can and should play a major role in this regard because they have the skill and the tools to do it. KM may not be employed because it is not fully understood or seems too complex or vague. It may also not be fully appreciated by the managers of the institution's budget.

Almost ten years after the official introduction of Knowledge Management within IFLA it is possible and appropriate

• To report on the state-of-the-art
• To examine the practical experiences that outline models of implementation that can encourage and guide the widespread application in different library contexts

Ontology is a cross-disciplinary field concerning with the study of concepts and theories that support the building of shared conceptualizations of specific domains. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the application of ontologies to solve modeling and classification problems in diverse areas such as Computer Science, Information Science, Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence, Linguistic, Knowledge Management and many others. The Ontology Research Seminar in Brazil foresees an opportunity and scientific environment in which researchers and practitioners from Information Sciences and Computer Science can exchange the theories, methodologies, languages, tools and experience related to the ontology development and application. In particular, this Fifth Edition of the Ontology Research Seminar is being held simultaneously with the Seventh Edition of International Workshop on Metamodels, Ontologies, Semantic Technologies and the First Workshop on Semantic Web and!
Amazonian Biodiversity Ontology, putting forward the effort of the research community in integrating the previous events about Ontologies that has happened in Brazil in recent years, in order to create a unique highly scientifically qualified international forum for presenting and discussing the subject.

Therefore, we provide a non-comprehensive list of areas and researchers��� communities from which we expect to receive submissions:

- Information Science, for instance working with ontologies, thesauri, knowledge management among other applications,
- Databases, for instance working with semantic data integration, linked open data, among other applications,
- Artificial Intelligence, for instance working with knowledge based systems, agents, ontology reasoning, among other applications
- Software Engineering, for instance working with conceptual modeling, Business Process Models, among other applications,
- Informatics in Education, for instance working with Educational Ontologies , Semantic Web-based Educational Standards, among other applications,
- Linguistics and philosophy, working with natural language processing using ontologies, theories of representation, among other applications.

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit theoretical, technical and practical research contributions that directly or indirectly address the issues above. Particularly welcome are e-science, life-sciences, e-business and cultural applications.

CALL FOR PAPERS

We would like to invite you to participate in the 5th Research Seminar of Ontologies in Brazil and International Workshop on Metamodels, Ontologies, Semantic Technologies, which will be held this year in Recife, PE, Brazil, on September 17-19. ONTOBRAS-MOST is the Brazilian meeting for discussing Ontologies and this year will be sponsored by Federal University of Pernambuco. We are interested in the various aspects of the field, from its philosophical and theoretical foundations to the new technologies and innovative applications. In this edition, the meeting is opened to submissions in two categories:

- Full papers (maximum 12 pages) written in English and describing work with clear demonstrated results. Accepted full paper will be invited for oral presentation. The best full papers will be invited to be extended for publication in an influential international journal.

- Short papers (maximum 6 pages) written in Portuguese, English, or Spanish and describing ongoing work. Accepted short papers will be invited for poster presentations.

With our 3rd Call for Papers we invite submissions that present significant case studies. This time we want to know what has been your experience with knowledge management in your organization. This includes current projects as well as established actions. What has worked out well? What actions and ideas have led to success? However, in the interest of our readers we also want to learn what has been a disappointment or even a complete failure. Surely, flops are more difficult to tell, but there are lots of lessons learned in it. Please feel free to keep the company or the personal you write about secret; however, as the author of your submission your name is to be published.
To maximize the benefit to our readers, we decided to provide a structure for the paper. This makes it easier for the reader to quickly find the relevant content and compare the case studies. At the same time, we hope to make it easier for new authors to contribute to this call.

-          To report on the state-of-the-art

-          To examine the practical experiences that outline models of implementation that can encourage and guide the widespread application in different library contexts 

 

The framing of the theory and state-of-the-art is entrusted to keynote speakers that have been selected.

 

Librarians, information scientists, professionals, researchers and other interested parties in knowledge management are invited to submit proposals for presentation at the meeting about use and implementation of KM by libraries or similar institutions which supply examples and models that can be applied and adapted to other situations.

 

The presentation proposals should contain a description of the KM system implemented, and

-          How it was designed

-          The implementation process followed

-          Organizational and technological choices made

-          Implementation timing and costs

-          The organizational details of running the process

-          The measurement of organizational and financial sustainability

-          How the impact/the impact has been assessed

 

The KM Section welcomes examples from different contexts (libraries of different sizes, libraries within cultural/administrative institutions, community organizations, companies, etc.).

 

This satellite meeting will feature a state-of-the-art tutorial on the basics of Knowledge Management followed by case studies.  The KM tutorial will explain the process of KM, the situations to which it is most usefully applied, and tools to implement and manage it.  A panel discussion of speakers will explore  the major and most critical issues.

An abstract of 300-500 words, in English and including a title.

An outline of the presentation.

Brief biographical information of the author(s)/presenter(s) with current employment information.

Submitter's  mailing address.

The submissions will be reviewed by a programme planning committee of the Knowledge Management Section Standing Committee. The selection will be based on the abstracts and rated on how well they fit the programme theme. Authors will be contacted by March 31, 2012.

 

Selection

 

For successful applicants the deadline for submission of full papers is May 31, 2012 to allow time for review of papers and all other organizational needs. The papers must be original submissions, not published elsewhere, and should be no longer than 15 pages, double-spaced. Papers should be in  English.

 

Presentations at the satellite meeting will be limited to approx. 20 minutes and will be a summary of the original paper.  The presenter is encouraged to use PowerPoint. The conference will be conducted in English and all presentations will be required to be in English.
